Before a session
Choose an end time before opening a game. Finish other responsibilities first, avoid playing when tired or upset, and decide what else you want the day to contain.
During play
Pause regularly, change posture, look away from the screen and check the time. Treat Play Credits as fictional entertainment units rather than money, savings or a measure of success.
Signals to notice
- Playing longer than planned or repeatedly extending an end time.
- Using play to avoid sleep, work, study or relationships.
- Feeling tense, irritable or compelled to continue after the activity stops being enjoyable.
- Treating previous results as a reason that a later result is “due”.
Taking a pause
Close the game, move to another room and choose a different activity with a clear beginning and end. A device timer or calendar reminder can provide an additional stopping cue.
